What to do first?

Fortunately for a lot of us, planning a loved one's funeral is not something we have to do frequently in our lifetimes and may not even be something we have done. But regrettably, the first question that arises after losing a loved one is, "what should we do first?" Losing a loved one and experiencing grief can be extremely intense emotions, and it can be difficult to think properly at these times.

Our staff at Shilvocks Independent Funeral Directors in Swadlincote is available to walk you through the procedures involved in registering a death and locating the necessary paperwork. What to do when a loved one dies at home

The first thing to do when a loved one dies at home is to confirm their death. We refer to this as verifying a death. The doctor, nurse, or special care team who has been caring for your loved one should be contacted when someone dies at home.

A doctor or colleague will arrive as quickly as possible to confirm that the patient has passed away after you have gotten in touch with the doctor's office or after-hours staff. After this, you can call 01283 246922 to reach Shilvocks Independent Funeral Directors in Swadlincote, where we will walk you through the process of bringing your loved one into our care.

How does a Doctor or nurse verify a death?

Some things need to be done to confirm a loved one’s death, and some people prefer to leave the room when this is happening. These include checking the person’s pupils for any reaction, checking for breathing and listening for their pulse with a stethoscope.

Although nurses can verify that someone has died, only a doctor can give you a medical certificate of death (MCCD), which will be completed within a couple of days after a loved one’s death.

If the Doctor is unsure about the actual cause of death, even if it was from natural causes, or if the deceased died suddenly and had not been under a doctor’s care or if the death is unnatural, they will raise these findings with the medical examiner and they may decide to refer the deceased’s case to the coroner for further investigation.

If your friend or loved one dies in a hospital or Hospice, the staff will organise for the death to be verified.

What to do when a loved one dies in a hospital or hospice

The personnel at the hospital or hospice will handle the preliminary preparations and alert the bereavement office so that the doctor may issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, which you might need to pick up along with any personal things. The hospital or hospice could now want to know who your selected funeral directors are.

Please be aware that you must choose the funeral director of your choosing. Every hospital, hospice, and other care facility will always try their most to help you through this difficult and trying time. Many will reserve specific spaces for family get-togethers. Please do not feel like you are "in the way," even if the hospital or hospice is extremely busy.

Accept the offers of support and assistance, and take your time. Employees in the medical field are highly knowledgeable about the emotions you might be experiencing at this time. If you are alone, get in touch with a friend or family member; their assistance will be priceless. Unless the death was anticipated and planned for, do not make decisions on your own.

When you get in touch with Shilvocks Independent Funeral Directors, we will set up a time that works for you to talk about your needs and make plans to bring your loved one into our care through hospice or the hospital.

How will we bring your loved one into our care?

We will assist you and give you an anticipated time of arrival on your initial call if your loved one died away at home and you have instructed our loving team to bring them into our care. We will also get in touch with you when we are nearby.

In order to help our loving staff welcome your friend or relative into our care, we ask that the road outside the house be kept as free as possible and that any cars parked on the front drive be relocated.

Our compassionate care team and private ambulance will try to park as close to the home as possible when we arrive. If it is allowed, we will park on the driveway itself. This guarantees that our tasks may be performed discreetly, quietly, and with the utmost dignity, respect, and compassion at all times.

But you are not by yourself. We can assist you with anything you need by making sure you have all the guidance and assistance on how to move forward. We will make sure you always receive the best treatment and our full attention, regardless of the type of service that would work best for you.
